THIRTEEN
The entrance to the terminal neutral ground was accessed from the ground floor.
In the center of the main floor in Grand Central Terminal sat the clock. It was situated above an information booth which dominated the center of the main concourse.
The clock itself was an integral part of the neutral ground, providing the doorway to the space every five minutes. The four convex faces of the clock were made of opaline, not opal, contrary to the myth, and inscribed to give off a warm glow. The compass that rested on top of the clock aligned to true north, and helped channel the energy of the ley line into the hidden spiral staircase below that led directly into the underground neutral area.
Descending several levels would allow access to another hidden areaâthe Terminal Restaurant and neutral ground proper.
Acheron and I stood near the entrance and waited.
Five minutes later, the clock faces glowed a little brighter and the seams around the door in the rear of the information booth gave off a quick pulse of white light like a flash.
Unsurprisingly, no one noticed. In this city, unless something was tearing buildings in half or causing massive delays in transportation, it barely got a second look. It was one of the major reasons supernaturals could live here in relative peace and anonymity. It was easy to hide in plain sight.
I opened the door and headed downstairs.
We descended four levels below the main concourse and tracks, down into the neutral area. The Terminal neutral space and restaurant was an architectural wonder, with vaulted ceilings covered in warm terracotta tiles and a spacious open floor plan designed by Rafael Guastavino, who later designed the Oyster Bar several levels above the Terminal which was open to the normal populace.
At first glance, both restaurants were identical; the subtle difference was only apparent in the staff and the design work. Each of the tiles of the Terminal were specially inscribed with sigils of nullification and obfuscation. Rumor was that Guastavino, who designed the place, was a sorcerer of the Seven. Although that was never proven or disproven, no one could deny his incredible talent.
The staff in the Terminal were known as Voids. Unofficially they were called âMTâsâ. Voids were immune to sorcery of any kind, which made them ideal for a place like this. They also possessed one special abilityâthey had the ability to neutralize any sigil or cast at will.
If there was ever a natural counter to a sorcerer, it was a Void. Hector, the manager of the Terminal, made it a point to have only Voids on his staff. He had never had a problem in the Terminal because of this.
The entrance archway of the Terminal contained several sets of glass doors that allowed visitors an excellent view of anyone entering the neutral space.
We crossed the threshold and the frame of the doors gave off a subtle golden glow, probably reacting to Acheronâs demonic presence.
âAcheron, hola!â a voice with a slight accent said from behind us. âItâs been too long.
